Trinity High School offensive lineman Joey Warburg originally committed to Illinois last summer but was looking around after the school’s coaching change.

In the final week’s leading up to Wednesday’s signing day, the 6-foot-6, 295-pound Warburg made visits to Illinois, Arkansas and Purdue and in a ceremony at the school he announced he was signing with the Boilermakers.

Warburg was one of 23 players announced by Purdue coach Danny Hope, including four from the state of Indiana. Warburg, who will join former Trinity teammate Jesse Schmitt at Purdue, was the lone Kentucky kid on the listing.

“He can play inside or outside,” Hope told GoldandBlack.com about Warburg. “He’s a little bit longer and more like a tackle prospect to me today, but you never know about three years down the road.”

One of five senior linemen for the Class 6-A state champion Shamrocks, Warburg anchored the line at right tackle. The Shamrocks scored 697 points in 14 games, amassing 456.9 yards a game including 225.8 yards a game on the ground. Trinity was ranked No. 1 nationally in several year-end polls.

Warburg is also an accomplished water skier. He has won state in water skiing at least five times and has been ranked as high as No. 19 nationally in his age group.

The Purdue class hail from 13 different states: six from Florida; four from Indiana and Texas; two from Michigan; and one each from Alabama, Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.
